One of the best decisions I made early on was hiring sooner than most people would.

At the time, it felt risky.

The business was still growing.
Cash flow mattered.
I could’ve kept doing everything myself.

And honestly, I probably could’ve handled it for a while longer.

But I realized something important early:

If I stayed stuck servicing every machine myself, growth would eventually slow down.

There’s only so much one person can do alone.

The Goal Was Never Just More Machines

A lot of operators think scaling means adding more machines.

But more machines without help usually just creates more work.

More driving.
More stocking.
More maintenance.

Eventually, the business starts controlling your schedule instead of the other way around.

I didn’t want that.

I wanted to build something that could continue growing without everything depending on me personally.

Hiring Freed Up My Time

Once I hired help, something changed immediately.

I had more time to:

  • Prospect locations

  • Build systems

  • Improve operations

  • Think long term

That time became more valuable than the payroll expense itself.

Instead of spending every hour reacting, I could focus on growing.

That shift changed the pace of the business completely.

It Also Forced Me to Build Systems

When you’re alone, you can keep everything in your head.

Once someone else gets involved, that stops working.

Now things need to be:

  • Organized

  • Repeatable

  • Clear

That ended up helping the business more than I expected.

The operation became cleaner because it had to.

Most Operators Wait Too Long

I understand why.

Hiring feels expensive in the beginning.

But staying overloaded has a cost too.

A lot of operators wait until they’re overwhelmed before bringing someone in.

By then, everything already feels chaotic.

For me, hiring earlier created room before things became a problem.

The Real Shift

The biggest thing hiring changed wasn’t just the workload.

It changed how I thought.

I stopped thinking:
“How much can I personally handle?”

And started thinking:
“How do I build something that can continue growing?”

That’s a completely different mindset.

The Takeaway

Your first hire won’t magically fix everything.

But it can create leverage.

More time.
More flexibility.
More capacity to grow.

That’s what changed everything for me.

Not because I stopped working.

I finally had room to focus on the parts of the business that actually move it forward.
